Located on the state line of Wisconsin and Illinois, Wilmot Mountain is a full service ski hill that has been a destination for Midwestern skiers from Chicago, Milwaukee and their suburbs for over 60 years. Recently purchased by Vail Resorts, the new ownership group wanted to create a unique ambiance due to the property’s proximity to the local city hubs. As the site is located far from the Western Mountain regions where Neo and Vail Resorts Development Company (VRDC) had previously worked together to create a vernacular particular to that area, Neo and VRDC collaborated to develop the new “Urban Resort” vernacular for the property. This Urban Resort concept includes a modern, industrial language with a nod to the existing craftsman and midcentury construction that was existing in the many years the resort had been growing prior to the property changing hands. The design concept sought to embody the dynamic activity and young spirited fun that goes hand-in-hand with outdoor winter sports through the use of large scale wall graphics and geometric floor patterns in a vibrant color palette, unexpected and energy-efficient lighting solutions, and the innovative use of traditional materials, such as steel, reclaimed wood and perforated aluminum.
